Stripe launched Link, a digital wallet designed for the AI era that lets autonomous agents request payments through an OAuth-based approval flow without exposing raw credentials. The product supports cards, bank accounts, crypto wallets, BNPL, and recurring subscription management, with 90-day purchase protection on eligible items. Stripe also introduced Issuing for agents and said support for agentic tokens and stablecoins is coming soon, positioning Link as infrastructure for AI-driven commerce.

This is less a consumer-wallet story than an attempt to own the payment layer for agentic commerce before standards fragment. The strategic value is that Stripe is converting trust, authentication, and checkout into a reusable API for AI workloads, which raises switching costs for merchants and developers while potentially disintermediating point solutions that would otherwise build their own spend-control stack. The biggest beneficiary is likely Stripe’s ecosystem and, secondarily, any software platform that can attach autonomous buying to a large installed base of users. The second-order issue is underwriting and fraud. Once agents can transact at machine speed, the bottleneck shifts from credential theft to policy abuse, mistaken authorization, and dispute resolution; that tends to favor incumbents with data, authorization rails, and settlement tooling over newer wallets or pure-agent startups. Over the next 6-18 months, adoption should be gated less by UX than by merchant acceptance, liability allocation, and how quickly card networks, banks, and BNPL providers agree on agent-safe tokenization. For public markets, the near-term read-through is mild negative for payment-adjacent startups and neutral-to-positive for infrastructure names that can monetize higher transaction volumes without owning consumer acquisition. The contrarian takeaway is that the biggest upside may not be in payments at all: if autonomous purchasing becomes routine, demand for always-on local compute, edge devices, and secure identity infrastructure could compound faster than expected. The risk is that enterprise and consumer regulators clamp down after the first meaningful wave of agent-caused errors, which would push commercialization out by 12-24 months rather than accelerate it. AAPL is only indirectly exposed, but the ecosystem angle matters: if personal agents become a mainstream use case, devices that can run them locally and securely gain strategic relevance. That said, the data point that AAPL is flat here suggests the market is not yet pricing a meaningful hardware pull-through from agentic wallets, leaving room for a rerating only if on-device agent adoption becomes visible in the next product cycle.
