Apple May Give Siri a Big AI Overhaul in iOS 27

Apple is reportedly testing a standalone Siri app, redesigned interface and a new "Ask Siri" button, expected to be unveiled at WWDC on June 8 and shipped with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 later this year. The change would reposition Siri toward a chatbot-style AI to better compete with OpenAI and Google, but the rollout has been delayed previously and plans remain unconfirmed and subject to change.

Analysis

A stronger, more conversational assistant built into a dominant OS is not just a UX tweak — it reallocates where compute, data collection and monetization happen. If more queries are resolved inside the device or the OS-level assistant, the immediate marginal value of a web ad impression falls because the click loop and downstream engagement are shortened; a 1–3% structural shift in query volume away from open web search over 12–36 months would translate into a mid-single-digit EPS growth headwind for an ad-dependent search incumbent. Conversely, on-device inference and model tuning shift dollars toward silicon and services — higher ASP hardware mix, premium services/subscription monetization and first-party data capture that increases lifetime value of users. Near-term catalysts are product reveal and developer uptake; medium-term validation is consumer retention and query deflection measured in quarterly metrics (search impressions, Safari traffic, voice-to-transaction conversions). Tail risks include regulatory scrutiny of default assistant behavior and data practices, visible model failures (hallucinations) that trigger mass opt-outs, or a failed developer ecosystem that prevents third-party monetization. Reversal drivers are easy: if the assistant fails real-world task completion metrics versus incumbents, adoption stalls and the market reprices the hardware/service premium. Second-order winners and losers diverge by capital intensity. Chip foundries and Apple-centric silicon suppliers gain if on-device AI increases ASPs and attach rates; cloud AI vendors could temporarily lose low-margin query volume but may benefit if the competitive response forces accelerated investment in server-side models. The strategic response from rivals — bundled models, ad reformatting, or better Android integrations — will determine whether this is a durable secular shift or a cyclical intensification of AI spending across the ecosystem.
