META’s move is less about near-term consumer demand and more about closing the platform gap that has made smart glasses structurally un-investable for developers. If third-party apps become a real operating layer, the value shifts from hardware gross margin to ecosystem lock-in, which is the only path that can justify premium pricing and drive replacement cycles. The first-order beneficiary is META because it can subsidize hardware while monetizing engagement, but the second-order winner could be the small set of developers able to ship lightweight, glanceable experiences before the category gets crowded.
