Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai Just Made a Decision That Could Move Nvidia and Broadcom Stock

Alphabet posted blowout Q2 results on July 22, led by Google Cloud sales of $24.8B (+82% YoY) and an expanding $51.4B cloud backlog. The company began recording revenue from selling custom TPU AI chips to select outside customers—currently a small line item, but positioned as a potential new top-line growth stream and a step toward competing more directly with Nvidia. Despite heavy capex pushing free cash flow negative in Q2, the article argues cloud growth and broader ad/AI tailwinds justify the investment case.

Analysis

The real market implication is not near-term revenue, but negotiating leverage: Alphabet can now use in-house silicon to lower inference cost per query and per training cycle, which should support cloud margin and make it harder for hyperscaler competitors to match price/performance without sacrificing returns. That is bullish for GOOG/GOOGL over 6-18 months because the TPU story is really a capex efficiency story, not a new growth line by itself.

For NVDA, the first-order risk is narrative, not earnings. TPU commercialization is a slow-burn substitute at the margin, most relevant in workloads where customers can tolerate a narrower software stack; that means the danger is incremental share loss in inference-heavy cloud deployments, while training demand and ecosystem lock-in still dominate. The more important second-order effect is that customers now have a credible alternative in vendor negotiations, which can compress gross-margin expectations across the AI hardware stack over time.

AVGO is a quieter beneficiary: if Alphabet’s TPU program scales, the design, networking, and custom-silicon content should support Broadcom’s AI franchise, but much of that value is likely already embedded in consensus. The contrarian miss is assuming TPU monetization is immediately accretive; in the near term it may actually intensify Alphabet’s capex profile before cash conversion improves. Falsifier: if cloud margin fails to expand over the next 2-3 quarters despite TPU usage rising, the market should treat this as a capital intensity escalation rather than an AI monetization breakthrough.
