Babcock & Wilcox reported Q2 2026 revenue of $319.7M (+130% YoY) and net income of $14.3M versus a $58.5M net loss a year earlier, with adjusted EBITDA up 57% YoY to $21.8M. The company raised its 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of $80M–$105M and highlighted major demand tailwinds tied to AI/data centers, including H1 2026 bookings of $2.7B (+1,058% YoY) and backlog of $2.6B (+533% YoY). Liquidity also strengthened with cash of $382.8M and debt of $276.8M, alongside balance-sheet actions: repurchasing $61.8M of Dec-2026 bonds and authorizing a $50M share buyback in July 2026.

Analysis

This is less about one quarter and more about BW proving it can monetize the AI power shortage before the cycle normalizes. The important mechanism is backlog conversion: if long-lead slots, turbines, and permitting keep moving, the market may stop valuing BW on current EBITDA and start valuing it on future contracted power-equipment cash flows. That is where multiple expansion can happen, but only if labor discipline holds and project slippage does not eat the margin uplift.

Relative winners are the supply-chain bottlenecks with scarce capacity and fast delivery windows; Siemens Energy is an indirect beneficiary as the reservation of turbine capacity becomes a gating item. Relative losers are slower EPCs and large-scale power vendors that compete primarily on efficiency rather than time-to-power, because hyperscalers are increasingly paying for schedule certainty over perfect thermodynamics. The second-order effect is that BW's hybrid approach could pull demand toward modular, phased builds and away from one-shot combined-cycle packages.

The key catalyst path is 1-3 months for a second NTP/booking conversion, and 6-18 months for evidence that the new mix is actually margin-accretive despite skilled-labor tightness. The contrarian miss is that the market may be underestimating the value of the buyback/debt cleanup while overestimating the quality of the current pipeline; if backlog converts slowly, equity gets punished because this is still a project business with working-capital and execution risk. Theses breaks if gross margin deteriorates again, NTP timing slips, or the data-center demand narrative cools before the 2027 construction window.
