Google is promoting Eclipsa Video, a new open HDR standard (based on SMPTE ST 2094-50) aimed at making HDR look consistent across different screens and lighting conditions. It uses dynamic, metadata-driven instructions (including a white reference anchor and headroom-adaptive gain curves) to reduce issues like crushed shadows, clipped highlights, and washed-out tones. Eclipsa support is planned for Android 17 and, longer term, across phones, tablets, and TVs, contingent on device makers, streaming apps, and content providers.

Analysis

This is more of an ecosystem-architecture event than a near-term earnings driver. The economic value sits in who controls the default video standard on Android/connected TV surfaces: if the open format gains traction, Google gets incremental distribution leverage and lower friction across YouTube, Google TV, and Android OEMs, while the Dolby-style licensing moat becomes a little less defensible over 12-24 months. For Apple, the setup is closer to neutral: co-development lowers the chance this becomes a pure anti-Apple standard, but any move toward open, device-agnostic playback modestly reduces the premium attached to tightly curated display experiences.

The first-order market reaction should be small because standards adoption is slow and fragmented. The real catalyst path is 1-3 quarters of OEM and app support, then 6-18 months of content library normalization; without that, this stays a press-release story. The key second-order effect is on bargaining power: if studios and TV makers can ship acceptable HDR without paying for proprietary tooling, the winner is the platform with the broadest distribution, not the format owner.

Contrarian view: the market may be overrating the likelihood that openness translates into material share gains. New video formats often add complexity rather than replacing incumbents, and consumers rarely punish or reward them directly. Falsifiers are straightforward: no meaningful Android 17 OEM commitments, no streaming-app adoption, or continued studio preference for proprietary HDR paths would leave the thesis with little P&L relevance.
