Strategy (MSTR) stock slides as Bitcoin weakness prompts TD Cowen target cut

Strategy Inc. (MSTR, formerly MicroStrategy) dropped over 8% after Bitcoin slid below $60,000, pressuring crypto-linked equities. TD Cowen cut its price target but kept a positive long-term outlook. The move suggests near-term downside tied to BTC price weakness and analyst recalibration.

Analysis

MSTR is trading less like a software equity and more like a high-beta convexity vehicle on BTC, so the immediate loser set is broader than just one name: COIN, MARA, RIOT, and crypto treasury-adjacent balance sheets all see their equity vol and financing optionality compress when spot weakens. The key mechanism is that every drawdown in BTC reduces the market’s willingness to pay a premium for levered exposure, which can turn a “treasury strategy” into a de-rating event even before any fundamental operating issue appears.

The more interesting second-order risk is on capital structure and market plumbing. If BTC stays below the psychologically important level for several weeks, MSTR’s cost of incremental capital rises, its convert/refi narrative gets less forgiving, and any future BTC purchases become more dilutive to the equity story. That can widen spreads in the whole crypto credit complex and make fresh issuance from miners or digital-asset vehicles harder to place.

Contrarian-wise, the move may be partly a positioning flush rather than the start of a new regime: the stock already embeds extreme BTC beta, so the first leg down often overshoots the change in intrinsic value. The cleaner signal is not the day-to-day tape but whether BTC can reclaim and hold the prior breakout zone over the next 1-3 weeks; failure there would argue for another leg of multiple compression over 1-3 months, while a quick reclaim would likely trigger the fastest squeeze back into MSTR and peers.
