Meet the Newest Member of the S&P 500. It's Up 365% Since Its IPO, and It Can Keep Climbing From Here.

Reddit (RDDT) was added to the S&P 500 mid-quarter after AvalonBay Communities’ merger with Equity Residential created Vivmark, with Reddit replacing the missing constituent. While Q2 results were very strong (revenue +61% YoY, EPS +178%, adjusted EBITDA margin expanding to 42.6%), shares sold off as U.S. daily active users declined sequentially amid fears that AI Overviews on Google are cutting off traffic. Management is betting on an AI-free community experience and expects U.S. logged-in users to rise from 23M to 100M and global users from 53M to 1B, while monetization is already improving (ARPU +51% in the U.S.). Valuation is ~21x forward earnings expectations, leaving upside if user growth stabilizes.

Analysis

The near-term setup is more technical than fundamental: benchmark inclusion can create a brief demand vacuum that supports price, but it also tends to front-load optimism and leave a weaker post-event tape if active managers use the liquidity to reduce exposure. That matters here because the stock is already priced like a growth compounder, so incremental upside depends on sustained multiple expansion rather than just another good quarter.

The deeper issue is that the business is trying to prove two things at once: that AI disintermediation won’t permanently impair traffic, and that monetization can keep compounding even if user growth slows. Those are not equal risks—ARPU can do a lot of work for 2-4 quarters, but if discovery traffic keeps leaking, the market will eventually focus on the durability of ad inventory rather than the headline growth rate. The small licensing stream is strategically important because it can become a higher-margin second engine, but it is too small today to offset a structural ad reset.

Consensus appears to be over-indexing on the AI threat in the very near term and underestimating how much of the current valuation is supported by execution on ad load and targeting. The bull case is intact only if U.S. engagement stabilizes over the next two earnings prints; if not, the multiple should compress faster than EPS can grow. The key falsifier is another sequential decline in core U.S. user trends combined with decelerating ARPU expansion—then this becomes a flow-driven trade, not a long-term compounder.
