John Wiley & Sons posted record fiscal 2026 results, with adjusted EBITDA margin up 220 bps to 26.2%, adjusted operating margin up 260 bps to 17.7%, EPS up 15% to $4.19, and free cash flow up 55% to $195 million. Management also raised its AI revenue run-rate to $49 million, completed the $452 million Emerald Publishing acquisition, and guided fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS to $4.60-$5.05 with EBITDA margin expanding to 26.5%-27.5%. The company returned a record $174 million to shareholders and expects Emerald to become free-cash-flow accretive in fiscal 2028.

Analysis

Wiley is transitioning from a cyclical publishing compounder into a higher-quality recurring-data asset, and the market is likely still underestimating how much of the upside now comes from mix shift rather than top-line growth. The important second-order effect is that AI monetization is becoming a procurement and compliance story, not just a content story: trusted, structured scientific data is far harder to replicate than generic text, so the defensibility increases as more enterprise use cases move from pilots to workflow integration. That creates a flywheel where research scale improves AI relevance, and AI usage raises the value of the research portfolio.

The Emerald deal looks less like traditional M&A and more like a strategic option on under-penetrated vertical data. The near-term FCF dilution matters mainly because it suppresses buyback capacity for 12 months, but the real upside is that Emerald deepens Wiley’s position in economics/finance/business just as corporate customers start budget cycles for domain-specific AI tools. If management executes on cross-sell and U.S. expansion, the acquisition can re-rate from a margin story into a data distribution story, which is typically worth a higher multiple than journals alone.

The main bear case is that learning remains a drag and could keep capping consolidated growth optics for several quarters; however, that may be exactly why the stock can work. Consensus may be too focused on the headline revenue bogey and not enough on FCF conversion, recurring mix, and operating leverage, which are the variables that usually drive multiple expansion in information services. The biggest risk is not revenue collapse but execution slippage on integration and AI commercialization, where any delay would hit both sentiment and the buyback narrative at once.
