Google Rolls Out 'AI Mode' to U.S. Search Users

Alphabet's Google has launched "AI mode" for all U.S. users, integrating an AI chatbot into its search engine, while also introducing Google AI Ultra, a $249.99 monthly subscription service offering advanced AI tools. Google's Gemini has experienced significant user growth, rivaling ChatGPT and Meta AI in monthly usage, according to Morgan Stanley research; however, Alphabet shares declined 1.5% on Tuesday and are down 13% year-to-date.

Analysis

Alphabet's Google has strategically advanced its artificial intelligence integration by launching "AI mode" for all U.S. search users, a feature CEO Sundar Pichai described as a "total reimagining of search." This mode embeds a conversational AI chatbot directly into the search interface, appearing as a distinct tab, and builds upon the existing AI Overview offering, which Pichai noted has reached 1.5 billion monthly users. Concurrently, Google unveiled a premium subscription, Google AI Ultra, priced at $249.99 per month for U.S. users, providing access to advanced tools like Gemini 2.5 Pro Deep Think mode and the AI filmmaking tool Flow. The existing $19.99 Google AI Pro plan has also been enhanced. These launches occur as Google's Gemini shows significant user growth, with Morgan Stanley research indicating a larger increase in usage between September and March compared to Meta AI and ChatGPT. In March, Gemini's monthly usage by survey respondents stood at 40%, nearly on par with ChatGPT's 41% and ahead of Meta AI's 39%. Despite these developments aimed at bolstering its AI leadership and monetization, Alphabet's shares (GOOGL) declined approximately 1.5% in Tuesday trading and are reported to be down about 13% in 2025 so far.
