AMN Healthcare reported Q2 revenue of $673M (+2% YoY), finishing 6% above the high end of guidance, aided by $25M labor disruption revenue vs a $10M assumption. Adjusted EPS rose to $0.77 (from $0.30 YoY) and Adjusted EBITDA was $73M (10.9% margin), with $27M of nonrecurring benefits lifting margins by ~290bps to adjusted EBITDA. Q3 guidance calls for $640M–$655M revenue and 6.5%–7% adjusted EBITDA margin, alongside plans to repurchase 85,000 shares at an average $26.33 and maintain leverage at ~1.5x ($750M debt).

Analysis

AMN is shifting from a pure pricing story to a volume-and-fill-rate story, which is more durable. The important second-order effect is that higher fulfillment across MSP, vendor-neutral, and third-party channels should improve share capture even before bill rates move, so the earnings recovery can continue without a dramatic pricing backdrop. That said, the mix is still fighting against lower-margin technology/workforce revenue, so the market should not extrapolate current consolidated margins straight-line.

Near term, the setup is actually a bit tricky: reported EBITDA will normalize down as the one-time labor-disruption and reserve benefits roll off, so the next quarter or two can look less exciting than the underlying demand data. The real catalyst is winter order flow and contract renewals; if demand remains elevated for 2-3 consecutive quarters, bill rates should follow with a lag, which is where the next leg of margin expansion comes from. If order growth fades before then, the stock likely reverts to a low-growth staffing multiple.

The consensus may be underappreciating 2027 operating leverage in nurse/allied and search, plus the balance-sheet optionality for tuck-in M&A. But it may also be too relaxed about the Kaiser reprocurement and international nurse visa bottlenecks, both of which can cap growth even if the domestic cycle improves. Jaide and ESSENTIAL are strategically sensible, but they are not enough to offset a demand disappointment; the thesis is really about sustained order strength into year-end and a late-2026 pricing inflection.
