Niu Technologies Announces Unaudited Second Quarter 2026 Financial Results

Niu Technologies reported Q2 revenue of RMB 1,440.4m (+14.7% YoY) but swung to a net loss of RMB 102.2m (vs net income of RMB 5.9m in Q2 2025) as gross margin fell to 16.0% from 20.1% (-410 bps). Despite higher scooter unit sales (+24.2% to 434,687), revenues per e-scooter declined 8.6% YoY, while operating expenses rose 28.6% and gross margin compression was driven by product mix shifts and higher upstream supply-chain costs. Management guided Q3 revenue to RMB 1,863m–2,033m (+10% to +20% YoY), but the profitability outlook remains under pressure given the widened losses.

Analysis

This reads as a scale-without-leverage problem, not a demand story. Unit growth is outpacing pricing, but the incremental volume is being bought through lower ASPs and heavier marketing, which usually means the channel is competitive rather than elastic; that tends to compress franchise value long before headline revenue growth rolls over. The service/app mix helps, but it is still too small to offset a structurally weaker gross margin base.

The bigger issue is that operating costs are now absorbing the revenue mix benefit, so the next 1-3 months likely hinge on whether management can show stabilization in domestic pricing and product mix. If not, the market will start treating NIU like a low-quality hardware distributor with optionality, not a growth compounder. The balance sheet is not distressed, but rising working capital intensity and payables usage imply that growth is being financed through the supplier base, which can work for quarters but not for long without a margin reset.

Contrarian view: the consensus may overfocus on shipped units and underweight the fact that volume growth is coming with lower unit economics. That said, the selloff risk may be somewhat front-loaded because the company still has liquidity and a credible services layer, so this is more a grinding multiple compression setup than an immediate solvency event. The thesis breaks if the next quarter shows gross margin recovery into the high-teens with opex growth well below revenue growth; otherwise the downtrend can persist for 6-18 months as investors re-rate away from hardware exposure and toward better-capitalized mobility names.
