Marc Benioff Says Wall Street's Fears That AI Will Kill Salesforce Are "Dead Wrong," Even as CRM Stock Has Fallen Over 25% in 2026. Should Investors Bet on His Conviction?

Salesforce’s fiscal Q1 revenue rose 13% YoY to a record $11.1B, and the company raised its full-year revenue outlook to $45.9B–$46.2B (from $41.5B prior year) despite the “SaaSpocalypse” sell-off. Adoption of Agentforce agentic AI is highlighted by 1.6B customer AI uses in Q1 (vs 14M two years ago) and agentic AI handling double the customer inquiries versus human agents. With EPS of $2.42 (up 52% YoY) and a ~14x forward P/E, Citigroup also lifted its target to $204 (from $187) on Aug. 18, supporting a more constructive stance after the stock fell to a multiyear low of $146.32 in June.

Analysis

The market is still pricing CRM like a legacy seat-license casualty, but the more important mechanism is that AI looks incremental to demand rather than substitutive so far. If agent usage keeps scaling, CRM can defend pricing power while extracting more work per account, which should support both operating leverage and multiple re-rating versus the rest of SaaS.

Second-order winner is the enterprise software vendor that can monetize workflow automation without giving away the platform: CRM likely takes share from point solutions and lower-tier support tooling. The loser is the broad SaaS basket, especially names whose differentiation is mostly UI/seat count; HUBS is less directly exposed than the market assumes, but its premium multiple is harder to defend if CRM proves AI can be layered onto a large installed base without revenue cannibalization.

The key risk is that usage metrics do not equal monetization; if AI lowers support costs but customer add-on revenue lags, the current enthusiasm becomes a margin story rather than a durable top-line story. Over 1-3 months, the catalyst is the next earnings/guidance cycle; over 6-18 months, the thesis depends on whether AI attach rates expand ARR and not just engagement. Falsification would be a deceleration in cRPO/billings or commentary that AI is bundled at minimal incremental revenue, which would cap the rerating fast.
