Qualcomm Earnings Preview: A Lot Of Growth Potential Not Baked In Yet (Rating Upgrade)

Qualcomm (QCOM) was upgraded to a Buy based on its data center pivot and accelerating automotive segment. Management targets doubling non-handset revenue to $40B by FY29 as data center and Automotive momentum offset the Apple modem business loss. The analyst estimates intrinsic value at $220/share, implying a ~23% valuation discount after a ~31% share-price decline.

Analysis

The market is still pricing Qualcomm like a mature handset supplier, so any credible path to diversified compute and automotive exposure can matter more for the multiple than for near-term EPS. The second-order effect is that a lower customer-concentration profile should narrow the stock’s “single-product” discount and make sell-side models less sensitive to Apple-related leakage; that is the real rerating channel, not the incremental revenue itself. If management can keep proving design wins, QCOM starts trading more like an industrialized platform supplier than a cyclical handset proxy.

The competitive read-through is mixed. In data center, QCOM is entering a credibility test against names with entrenched socket share and much faster deployment cycles, so the market will demand named customer traction rather than broad TAM language. In automotive, the opportunity is more durable but slower; it supports a higher floor for the story, yet it is unlikely to re-rate the stock on its own until revenue and backlog visibly compound.

Main risk: the pivot narrative runs ahead of actual shipment cadence. Over the next 1-3 months, any lack of upward revision to non-handset revenue or gross margin mix would likely deflate the post-upgrade move. Over 6-18 months, the thesis is falsified if Apple transition losses outpace diversification, or if data center/auto remain option value rather than measurable P&L contributors. The consensus may be missing that the stock can still be cheap while staying dead money until execution proof arrives.
