The Chase Sapphire Preferred's Best Transfer Deal Is Going Away. Here Are 3 That Still Make It Worth It

Chase Ultimate Rewards points-to-World of Hyatt transfers are set to devalue on Oct. 1 as the transfer ratio drops from 1:1 to 4:3, cutting value by 25% (e.g., 40,000 Chase points become 30,000 Hyatt points). The change applies only to select cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, while Sapphire Reserve transfers remain unaffected. The article highlights remaining 1:1 transfer partners (United, Southwest) and lower-cost hotel partners (IHG) as alternatives.

Analysis

This is a loyalty-economics adjustment, not a core earnings event. The direct P&L effect on JPM is likely de minimis versus the size of its card franchise, but the second-order issue is franchise stickiness: premium travel-card users are unusually sensitive to redemption value, so even a small haircut can change where points get parked and which cards get top-of-wallet spend over the next 1-3 quarters.

Relative winners are IHG and, to a lesser extent, ABNB; relative losers are H and any hotel-chain that relied on Chase users treating its points as a premium arb. IHG should capture value-seeking hotel demand because it becomes the obvious fallback when a high-quality transfer path gets less attractive. ABNB can benefit if the card’s new travel economics keep more discretionary lodging spend in vacation rentals rather than legacy hotels, but that is a slow-burn share shift, not an overnight rerating.

The contrarian view is that the market may overread this as negative for Chase or Hyatt. Sapphire Preferred is still a mass-affluent acquisition product with multiple non-Hyatt reasons to hold it, and the highest-value Sapphire Reserve users are unaffected. If JPM’s next two quarters show stable acquisition, spend, and retention, the thesis that this hurts ecosystem quality is probably false; the real check is whether Hyatt transfer traffic and loyalty engagement soften by Q4 rather than just creating a one-time point-dump before the deadline.
