Samsung guided record Q2 operating profit of ~89.4T won (~$58B), up >19x YoY, with revenue expected at ~171T won (+129% YoY) driven by AI-server demand for high-bandwidth memory and high-capacity DRAM. Despite the strength, memory peers sold off sharply—Samsung shares fell >10% intraday and Micron shares dropped similarly as investors appear to treat the blowout results as “priced in.” Micron separately reported fiscal Q3 revenue up 346% YoY to $41.5B and guided fiscal Q4 revenue ~ $50B (adj. EPS ~ $31), but concerns about the cyclicality/timing of a downturn linger.

Analysis

The tape is telling us the market is less focused on current scarcity and more on the supply response that scarcity invites. In memory, the best operating quarters often arrive just before capex discipline breaks: Samsung validating peak economics increases the odds that 2027 supply growth comes in harder than bulls expect, especially if Korean producers decide to protect share rather than margins.

Relative winners are not the whole group. MU is still the highest-quality way to express AI memory exposure because HBM mix and pricing power should outlast commodity DRAM, but WDC and SNDK are more exposed to a NAND re-pricing cycle where incremental supply can hit faster and margins mean-revert more violently. SSNLF is the key watch item on the short side: if management turns record profitability into a capex arms race, it becomes the marginal price-setter that compresses industry returns.

The contrarian point is that the selloff may be too mechanical if investors are treating "record quarter" as synonymous with "peak demand." AI server buildouts are still the cleanest demand anchor in semis, so the first reversal signal would be not weaker end demand but lead-time normalization and spot DRAM/NAND flattening. Over 1-3 months, the catalysts are MU commentary and memory pricing; over 6-18 months, the risk is an industry-wide supply wave that turns today’s margins into tomorrow’s peak-cycle earnings trap.
