Kyndryl: Looks Mispriced After The Internal Control Selloff (Upgrade)

Analyst InsightsCorporate Guidance & OutlookCompany FundamentalsCorporate Earnings

Kyndryl was upgraded to Buy with a $13 price target, implying about 19% upside. The company’s transformation appears on track, with management targeting 80% of revenue from higher-margin post-spin signings by FY 2027 and Q4 progress supporting that thesis. Profitability and cash generation are improving, including FY 2026 adjusted EBITDA up 6% year over year and operating cash flow of $950 million.

Analysis

The market is starting to treat KD less like a stranded legacy outsourcer and more like a slow-burn margin compounding story. The key second-order effect is that a cleaner mix shift can re-rate the multiple before absolute growth accelerates: if the business proves it can convert signings into durable, higher-quality revenue, equity holders may get paid on earnings durability rather than headline top-line growth. That matters because services businesses usually de-rate on low visibility; here, improving cash conversion is the bridge from "prove it" to "own it".

The biggest competitive implication is not that KD suddenly takes share from the giants, but that it can become a more credible vendor for cost-sensitive enterprise refresh cycles. That can pressure smaller managed-services peers with weaker balance sheets and less operating leverage, especially if customers prefer a vendor showing improving free cash flow and execution consistency. The flip side is that any improvement in profitability may come partly from mix and cost discipline rather than demand strength, so the competitive moat is still not fully self-evident.

Risk is mostly medium-term rather than day-to-day: the market can reward the story for several quarters, but the thesis breaks if post-spin signings do not translate into recognized revenue and sustained margin expansion by FY27. A slowdown in enterprise IT budgets, a pricing reset from large accounts, or any wobble in cash generation would compress the multiple quickly because investors are buying trajectory, not just current earnings. In other words, the setup is constructive, but the stock remains vulnerable to a "show me" haircut if progress plateaus.

Consensus may be underestimating how much cash generation can matter for an unloved transformation name. If operating cash flow holds near this level, KD has optionality to de-risk the balance sheet, buy back stock, or simply force the market to stop valuing it as a low-quality turnaround. The move still looks somewhat underdone if execution continues, but the asymmetry is now more about patience than upside surprise.
