Here's Why You Should Retain DOW Stock in Your Portfolio

Dow expects pressured demand in Europe and Asia and guides Q3 2024 revenues to ~$10.6B and operating EBITDA to ~$1.3B, reflecting a ~$25M headwind from higher U.S. Gulf Coast maintenance plus a late-July Texas ethylene cracker incident. Offsetting positives include $1B in full-year 2023 cost savings, >$3B in underlying earnings expected annually by 2030 from its Decarbonize and Grow strategy, and shareholder returns of $2.6B in 2023 and about $1.38B in 1H24. With shares up 3.6% YoY, the near-term outlook remains cautious due to weak building/construction and durable goods volumes amid elevated inflation/high rates.

Analysis

DOW is still a cyclical beta name masquerading as a self-help story. Cost cuts help defend EBITDA, but in a weak demand tape they mostly offset fixed-cost deleverage rather than create operating upside, so the next 1-3 months are likely driven more by macro prints and outage headlines than by management execution. The cleanest read-through is that the equity is trading on revisions, not balance-sheet stress; liquidity lowers bankruptcy risk, but it does not prevent multiple compression if volumes keep missing.

Second-order, the incremental capacity and decarbonized resin narrative can eventually pressure peers with similar polyethylene exposure if supply comes on before demand normalizes. That argues for caution on resin-heavy names like LYB and for relative preference toward less GDP-sensitive chemical franchises such as HWKN, where earnings momentum is less tied to housing and durable goods. Any benefit from lower-emission products is 6-18 months out and depends on customer willingness to pay, which is currently unproven.

Contrarian view: the market may be over-penalizing a few quarters of outage/turnaround noise and underestimating how quickly EBITDA can snap back if global industrial activity stabilizes. The real falsifier is a sustained improvement in China/Europe volumes or a guide-up that shows the incident is contained; absent that, DOW is a fading cyclical with mostly tactical upside on severe selloffs, not a clean compounder.
