Red Bull Won the Cooler. Celsius Won the Chatbot. A $152B Category Fragmented by Benefit, Not by Volume.

5W’s Functional Beverages AI Visibility Index 2026 ranks brands by estimated AI citation share, led by Celsius at ~13%, followed by Red Bull at ~11% and Liquid Death at ~8.5%. The report cites prebiotic soda growth of an estimated 245% in U.S. channels (2022–2024) alongside rising AI “citation surface.” It also argues that AI prompts are shifting demand from “shelf volume” winners to brands owning the “healthy energy/gut-health” benefit narrative (with Celsius boosted by its fitness energy positioning and the cited ~$1.65B Alani Nu acquisition).

Analysis

This is more a distribution-signal memo than a fundamental earnings catalyst: the marketable edge is not higher category demand, it is lower customer-acquisition friction for brands with a crisp functional story. That favors CELH first, then other digitally legible names in the space, while legacy energy players like MNST/KO/PEP are less exposed to a recommendation layer that privileges narrow use-cases over shelf presence. The second-order winner may actually be the agencies and measurement stack that sell “AI visibility” services, because brands will redirect some SEO/PR budget into LLM optimization before they can prove any sales lift.

The key risk is that citation share is a weak proxy for retail sell-through. Until we see scanner data, retailer replenishment, or management commentary on conversion, this is mostly sentiment and top-of-funnel optionality; the signal should matter in weeks, not days, and may only show up in 1-2 quarters if it is real. For GOOGL, AI Overviews are a double-edged sword: more control over answer surfaces supports engagement, but if the answer layer reduces click-through, ad monetization may not benefit in the same proportion.

Contrarian view: consensus may be overestimating how quickly consumers trust chat-based recommendations for a low-involvement purchase like beverages. If the query layer is noisy or easily gamed by PR spend, the “AI citation share” ranking will have more correlation with media strategy than with durable share gains. The thesis is falsified if CELH/functional peers do not show relative scanner-share improvement by the next earnings cycle, or if Google/OpenAI alter surfacing rules so rankings become effectively pay-to-play.
