Earnings call transcript: BCE tops Q2 2026 estimates as cash flow stays strong

BCE posted Q2 2026 adjusted EPS of $0.65 (vs. $0.6319 expected, +2.9%) and revenue of $6.18B (vs. $6.17B, +0.2%), with free cash flow over CAD 1B and leverage improving to ~3.7x. Despite the narrow earnings/revenue beat and unchanged full-year guidance, the market focused on BCE’s heavy fiber and AI infrastructure capex cycle (CapEx +CAD 317M YoY) and whether it will translate into faster growth, keeping shares near the low end of the 52-week range. Management reiterated the 3.5x net-debt leverage target by end-2027 after CAD 2.5B of public debt offerings in June and debt repurchases below par.

Analysis

This print is less about the earnings beat than about whether BCE can convert a heavy capital cycle into a cleaner asset mix. The market is discounting the capex line more than the economics: the AI/data-center build looks partially de-risked by tenant prepayments and contracted capacity, so the real issue is timing of cash conversion, not outright demand failure. That matters because the stock is trading like a slow-growth utility even though the company has multiple optionality layers that could re-rate if execution stays on plan.

The more important competitive signal is in telecom pricing discipline. A lower churn backdrop plus less handset subsidy behavior suggests the industry may be moving away from growth-at-any-cost, which should help BCE’s margin structure and pressure rivals that rely more on promotions to defend share. If that holds for 1-3 months, the biggest relative losers are the operators with weaker fiber footprints and less pricing power, while BCE’s fiber-heavy markets should keep taking share with less discounting.

Contrarianly, the consensus may be underappreciating how much downside is already in the stock. The market is treating BCE as a leveraged value trap, but if management keeps leverage on a 3.5x path and demonstrates even modest revenue inflection in Ziply and AI Fabric by late 2026, the multiple can expand from distressed-utility levels. The real falsifier is not one quarter of flat revenue; it is a miss in the Q3/Q4 capex ramp, a slip in permit approvals, or any sign that the wireless pricing improvement is temporary rather than structural.
