Qualcomm investor day to detail data center plans Wednesday

Bank of America raised Qualcomm’s price target to $195 from $165 but kept an Underperform rating, implying limited upside despite a more bullish AI roadmap. The firm still sees roughly $2.5 billion in CY2028 AI revenue and expects Qualcomm to outline a $2 billion to $5 billion near-term data center opportunity, but warns the stock already prices in as much as $10 billion in CY2028 data center and AI sales at 20% EBT margins. The note highlights execution risk and intense competition from Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Marvell, Arm, and Intel.

Analysis

The market is being asked to re-rate QCOM on a story that is still mostly promise rather than cash flow, which is exactly where crowded AI trades tend to misprice optionality. The key second-order effect is not whether Qualcomm can win a few design wins, but whether the company can convert a consumer-device architecture into a credible data-center stack fast enough to matter before incumbents lock in multi-year roadmaps. That creates a classic “good narrative, late monetization” setup: the stock can stay supported into Investor Day, but sustained upside likely requires evidence of deployment velocity, not just TAM expansion.

For competitors, this is more a threat to smaller AI-infrastructure challengers than to the leaders. The biggest pressure is on firms pitching inference-efficient alternatives to Nvidia, especially where power and cost-per-token matter; if Qualcomm can validate edge-to-data-center portability, it could siphon attention from AMD, Arm, and Intel in parts of the inference market even if it never displaces Nvidia in training. The supply-chain implication is that advanced packaging, memory bandwidth, and networking vendors could see a secondary benefit only if Qualcomm proves it can actually scale shipments — otherwise, those names trade off the headline without the follow-through.

The contrarian view is that the market may be underestimating how much of the upside is already embedded in AI-adjacent optimism, while overestimating the speed with which “non-handset mix” becomes meaningful. The right horizon here is months, not days: Investor Day can support the multiple, but the real catalyst window is 2H26 through CY27 when customers either ramp or walk away. If guidance comes in below the implied $2B–$5B near-term addressable range, the stock likely de-risks quickly because the bull case depends on a very steep execution curve.
