Micron: Keep Calm And Party On

Micron reported Q3 revenue growth of 346% and a 1,215% YoY surge in EPS, far exceeding expectations. Gross margin expanded 46 percentage points YoY to 85%, supported by unprecedented pricing power amid tight supply and AI-driven demand. Multi-year, non-cancelable strategic customer agreements reduce cyclicality and bolster earnings resilience.

Analysis

This reads less like a one-quarter beat and more like a repricing of the memory business from cyclical commodity to constrained strategic input. The key market mechanism is that contract visibility plus scarce supply can keep near-term EPS estimates moving up while suppressing the usual inventory-dump downside that has historically capped semiconductor multiples. In the next 1-3 months, the stock can keep working if investors start capitalizing forward free cash flow on a higher trough margin, but that also makes MU the cleanest expression of the AI capex bottleneck.

The second-order winners are the tools names if this prompts a real capacity response: AMAT, LRCX, and KLAC should benefit only if management teams actually convert rhetoric into WFE spend over the next 2-4 quarters. The losers are memory-heavy end markets that cannot fully pass through costs—PCs, smartphones, and lower-end server OEMs—where higher component costs can compress gross margins even if unit demand stays steady. This is also mildly bearish for any hardware business with long design-in cycles and weak pricing power.

The contrarian risk is that the market extrapolates scarcity too far. If Samsung or SK Hynix turn on capex faster than expected, or if AI server build rates normalize after an initial rush, memory pricing can mean-revert quickly and MU’s multiple can compress before the earnings base does. Watch DRAM/NAND spot trends, capex commentary from peers, and whether customer commitments start to look like peak-cycle prebuying rather than durable demand.

The cleanest falsifier is a guide that shows margin normalization sooner than the street expects, or visible supply additions by mid-2025. If that happens, the trade shifts from owning the scarcity story to fading it.
