Earnings call transcript: HCLTech Q1 2026 stock rises on record bookings

HCLTech reported Q1 FY2027 revenue of INR 34,579 crores (+13.9% YoY; +1.8% QoQ) and EBIT of INR 5,831 crores, with operating margin expanding 40bps QoQ to 16.9%. Advanced AI revenue rose 62.1% YoY to $171 million (annualized $688 million) and bookings hit a record $2.4 billion, driving the stock up 4.91% to $1,221.2 after the call. Management kept full-year constant-currency organic revenue guidance at 1%-4% and operating margin at 17.5%-18.5% while investing $151 million in Sarvam AI and initiating an AI data center plan (INR 3,500 crores, scaling to 50MW), alongside an interim dividend of INR 12/share.

Analysis

This reads as a quality-of-earnings upgrade, not a demand breakout. The key second-order effect is competitive: HCLTech is trying to move up the stack into AI-enabled annuity and selective infrastructure ownership, which forces peers like INFY, WIT, and TCS to defend pricing with either more automation or lower-margin work. If HCL can truly monetize sovereign AI and full-stack delivery, it can widen the spread versus peers whose AI narrative is still mostly advisory and implementation.

The near-term risk is that the market extrapolates AI revenue too aggressively while ignoring the 2%-3% portfolio deflation embedded in the model. The data-center build is the real swing factor over 6-18 months: it can improve stickiness and pricing power if utilized, but it also introduces capex, amortization and execution drag before revenue visibility is proven. Watch for any deterioration in DSO, services mix, or a pause in bookings conversion over the next 1-2 quarters; that would tell you the AI story is too early and the current rerating is fragile.

Contrarian view: the move may be better than the top line suggests, but not enough to justify a chase after an after-hours gap. Consensus is probably underweight the margin defense and ROIC signal, yet overweight the immediate monetization of AI factories and sovereign AI. The stock should work if management keeps margins near the high end of guidance while bookings convert; it should fail if revenue growth stays modest and capex starts to pressure free cash flow.
