MercadoLibre’s operating income fell to $611 million from $763 million as the company increased spending to defend its lead against rising competition in Brazil, its largest market and roughly half of revenue. UBS downgraded the stock to neutral, saying margins may stay under pressure and only begin to recover in 2027. Management argued Latin America’s low online shopping and credit penetration still leaves a large long-term growth opportunity, but near-term profit pressure remains the key concern.

Analysis

The market is pricing MELI as if competition is a margin-only problem, but the more important second-order effect is that Brazil/LatAm e-commerce is still in a land-grab phase where share can be defended only by subsidizing logistics and merchant economics. That means near-term earnings power is less informative than whether the company can keep unit economics from deteriorating as GMV growth re-accelerates; if it can, the current multiple compression is likely temporary rather than structural.

The key contrarian point is that competition itself may be expanding the category faster than it is fragmenting it. In underpenetrated markets, lower shipping thresholds and better seller tools can pull in first-time buyers, raising purchase frequency across the ecosystem; MELI’s real moat is not just marketplace share, but the coupling of payments, credit, and fulfillment, which increases switching costs over a 12-24 month horizon. The risk is that fintech monetization lags merchandise growth, forcing the firm to fund growth with lower take-rates longer than bulls expect.

A bigger tail risk is not Amazon or Shopee in isolation, but a prolonged margin reset if Brazilian customer acquisition costs and logistics inflation stay elevated while rate cuts slow consumer credit expansion. In that scenario, EPS revisions can keep drifting down for multiple quarters, and the stock could remain range-bound even if revenue stays strong. The reversal catalyst would be evidence that operating income bottoms before gross merchandise value growth does—i.e., stabilization in shipping mix, ad monetization, and credit loss rates over the next 2-3 reporting cycles.
