Stock futures are little changed after chip rebound lifts S&P 500 to winning day: Live updates

S&P 500 futures were flat and Nasdaq 100 futures were unchanged on Monday night after chip stocks helped lift the S&P 500 0.30% and the Nasdaq Composite 0.86%, partially reversing last week’s tech rout. The Dow lagged, falling 80.77 points (-0.16%), while traders also monitored fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire developments after renewed strikes and ceasefire comments from both sides. Looking ahead, investors will watch earnings from United Natural Foods, J.M. Smucker, Designer Brands and Lands' End, along with wholesale inventories, existing home sales and the NFIB small business index.

Analysis

The market is still trading as if AI capex is a standalone growth engine, but the more important second-order effect is that the trade is becoming self-reinforcing through passive and systematic flows. Once a handful of semiconductor names reassert leadership, index-weighted buying pulls the entire complex back up, which can mask deteriorating breadth and create a brittle advance that is vulnerable to any miss on guidance, margin, or supply commentary. That makes the next 2-6 weeks a flow-driven tape rather than a fundamentals-driven one.

The geopolitics overlay is asymmetric for risk assets: the immediate concern is not a growth shock, but a volatility shock through energy and rates. A renewed Middle East flare-up would tend to pressure cyclicals and consumer-sensitive names before it meaningfully helps defensives, because higher headline oil and shipping-risk premiums can hit sentiment faster than they hit realized inflation data. In that setup, the market’s current willingness to fade bad news is likely to break first in small caps and discretionary retail, not in megacap tech.

For the coming earnings prints, the main issue is inventory quality and promotional intensity, not top-line demand. Retail and consumer-facing names with weak gross margin leverage are exposed if input costs or freight tick up even modestly, while the broader market is likely to treat any cautious guidance as confirmation that the recent rally has run ahead of earnings revisions. The contrarian view is that the semiconductor bounce may be less about durable AI demand and more about positioning cleanup after last week’s de-risking; that makes upside possible, but the carry of being long crowded momentum here is poor.

Over a multi-month horizon, the key reversal catalyst is either a capex digestion phase in semis or a higher-volatility macro regime caused by geopolitics and rates. If neither arrives, the trade can persist; but if both arrive together, the market can de-rate quickly because leadership is narrow and expensive. The setup argues for selective exposure, not broad beta.
