Service Corporation International (SCI) reported Q2 2026 adjusted EPS of $0.90 vs $0.88 prior-year and consolidated revenue of $1.1B (+4%), with adjusted operating cash flow rising 42% YoY to $238.8M. The company raised full-year adjusted operating cash flow guidance by $50M to a $1.085B midpoint, while narrowing 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $4.10–$4.30 (midpoint $4.20) and increasing maintenance CapEx by $10M to $335M. SCI also deployed $123M to repurchase 1.5M shares at an average ~$76 and ended Q2 with $1.6B liquidity (including ~$260M cash), crediting improved cemetery preneed collections and a renewable energy investment credit that reduced cash taxes by ~$64M.

Analysis

SCI’s setup is better than the headline EPS print suggests because the operating inflection is being driven by mix, not volume alone. The important mechanism is deferred margin: higher preneed intake and a more insurance-heavy funding mix should convert into better recognized gross profit over the next 2-3 quarters even if top-line growth stays in the low-single digits. That makes the stock less about this quarter’s margin compression and more about whether management can keep turning backlog into cash and then into buybacks.

The cleaner winner is SCI relative to smaller funeral-home operators with less scale, weaker procurement leverage, and fewer levers on capital returns. The second-order effect is that a better-trained, AI-assisted sales force and more fixed pay should raise retention and lead conversion, which can slowly widen the gap versus regional competitors that rely on more variable labor and less systematized selling. The flip side is that this is not a clean secular growth story; it is a high-fixed-cost, trust-return-sensitive cash machine, so a few quarters of weaker volume or market drawdown can quickly expose the low organic growth rate.

The market may underappreciate how much of near-term free cash flow is flattered by nonrecurring tax support. Even with that caveat, normalized cash generation still looks strong enough to fund repurchases and moderate deleveraging, so the balance sheet is not the issue; the real risk is earnings multiple compression if investors decide the 2H margin expansion is already priced in. A more skeptical read is that cremation mix and demographic tailwinds are likely real, but the monetization curve is slower than bulls expect, so the stock needs continued execution rather than just better macro mortality trends.

Catalyst path: over days, the share reaction should track whether investors focus on the raised cash flow guide or on the fact that the EPS guide was only reaffirmed. Over 1-3 months, margin stabilization from the insurance conversion and deferred cemetery revenue recognition is the key test. Over 6-18 months, the debt maturity/refinancing window and the sustainability of preneed velocity will determine whether SCI deserves a higher quality multiple or remains a steady compounder with limited upside.
