That is a slow-burn headwind for premium vendors, but a more immediate tailwind for electrical/power-adjacent names and hyperscalers that can defer greenfield capex by retrofitting legacy sites.

For NVDA, the issue is not demand destruction but mix: if a meaningful share of near-term inference spend shifts into lower-density retrofits, the cooling bottleneck moves from bleeding-edge rack density to more standardized deployments. That can delay the optics of extreme Blackwell-level infrastructure intensity, which matters for ecosystem suppliers whose upside depends on the market extrapolating every AI dollar into a maximum-thermal-spec buildout. The negative read-through is therefore more about medium-term pricing and attach rates than about unit demand.
The consensus is probably underestimating how quickly standardization can compress margins once one hyperscaler publishes a reference design. The larger risk to the shorts is that commoditization can expand volumes fast enough to offset per-unit price erosion, especially if retrofits are cheaper and faster than greenfield builds.
