Barclays lifts S&P 500 target, bets on earnings strength amid choppy backdrop

Barclays raised its S&P 500 year-end target to 7,800 from 7,650 and introduced a 2027 target of 8,800, while lifting 2026 EPS to $337 from $321 and 2027 EPS to $389. The bank remains constructive overall but highlighted risks from AI capex funding/monetization, sticky inflation, higher-for-longer rates, and weaker consumer spending; it also cut Financials to Neutral and kept Consumer negative. The backdrop is risk-off, with South Korea’s KOSPI slumping 8% and triggering a circuit breaker as the AI rally unwinds.

Analysis

The key second-order takeaway is that the market is moving from a liquidity-led multiple story to an earnings-and-capex scrutiny regime. If the AI buildout is really heading toward a trillion-plus annual spend run rate, the winners are no longer the obvious chip/compute beneficiaries alone; power, grid, cooling, and industrial capex enablers should see a longer duration demand tail than the headline AI software names, whose monetization is still lagging spend.

A more interesting implication is margin dispersion. Higher rates and sticky input costs create a widening gap between companies that can self-fund growth and those dependent on external financing, especially in consumer and private-credit-sensitive areas. That favors quality balance sheets and capital-intensive infrastructure winners while pressuring long-duration growth stories where the equity value is still underwriting future monetization.

The contrarian read is that consensus may be too focused on the headline index target and not enough on breadth deterioration. If consumer demand softens in 2H and the Fed stays restrictive longer, earnings revisions could become a stock-pickers’ market even if the index holds up. The near-term risk window is 1-3 months: macro surprises can easily trigger de-grossing in crowded AI and consumer names before any fundamental deterioration shows up in reported numbers.
