Trump Accounts Are Live. Here's What You're Allowed to Buy

Trump Accounts launched July 4, 2026 for eligible children under 18, with the U.S. Treasury depositing the first $1,000 for children born 2025–2028. Accounts are restricted at launch to the State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF charging just 0.02% fees, steering savings into broad U.S. equity exposure rather than individual stocks or riskier assets. The article projects a $1,000 deposit could grow to nearly $149,000 by age 65 at an 8% annualized return, framing the program as a long-term wealth tailwind.

Analysis

The real economic beneficiary is STT, but not because of near-term fee revenue; it’s because a government-defaulted, long-duration savings wrapper creates unusually sticky, zero-acquisition-cost AUM. Even if the per-account economics are tiny at launch, the strategic value is in lifetime retention and the possibility that this becomes the first financial account a household never abandons, which is far more valuable than a one-off ETF sale.

For the underlying market, the flow is too small to matter for index levels, but it subtly reinforces the same forces already winning: passive, cap-weighted ownership and incremental support for the largest U.S. mega-caps. That is mildly supportive for NVDA over a 6-18 month horizon only insofar as any new savings dollar is destined for the same concentration trade; it is not a tradable flow story today. Active managers, small caps, and non-U.S. exposure lose the marginal new-investor slot, which matters more as a behavioral signal than as an AUM shock.

The contrarian read is that the market will probably overstate the policy’s financial impact and understate execution risk. If account openings are slow, Treasury implementation is messy, or the default menu expands and dilutes STT’s first-mover advantage, the thesis collapses quickly. Falsifiers to watch: no meaningful AUM disclosure from STT over the next two quarterly reports, or evidence that the eligible cohort and contribution rate are too small to move quarterly flows by more than basis points.
