Honeywell stock falls as 2026 EPS guidance disappoints

Honeywell fell 1.5% after issuing 2025 adjusted EPS guidance of $10.35-$10.65, with the midpoint below the $10.52 consensus. Sales guidance of $38.8B-$39.8B was roughly in line, while free cash flow guidance of $5.3B-$5.6B came in above estimates. The company also outlined 2026 Honeywell Technologies targets ahead of the planned aerospace spin-off completion at the end of June.

Analysis

The market is likely reacting less to the headline EPS cut than to the shape of the post-spin profile: lower near-term earnings guidance with cash flow still intact usually forces a re-rating toward quality-of-earnings skepticism. That matters because HON has been trading as a quasi-industrial defensive, and the new framework suggests the remaining company may be more of a slower-growth, higher-multiple cash compounder than a broad-based industrial cyclical.

The second-order issue is index and factor flow. A cleaner aerospace separation can attract aerospace/defense dedicated capital into the new asset, while the remaining entity risks being treated as a simplified but lower-growth industrial with less internal optionality. If investors conclude the separation mainly strips out the higher-growth mix while leaving a mature automation/control business, multiple compression can persist for several months even if free cash flow holds.

The contrarian angle is that consensus may be underestimating the value of the separation itself. If the aerospace business rerates higher on pure-play scarcity and the remaining company proves it can convert cash above guidance, the combined sum-of-parts could exceed the pre-spin conglomerate multiple within 2-3 quarters. The setup is therefore less about one-quarter EPS disappointment and more about whether management can use the next two print cycles to de-risk execution and prove the remnant deserves a premium industrial cash-flow multiple.

Catalysts are concentrated: the spin completion is the near-term catalyst over days, while the first post-separation quarter will determine whether the market rewards the cleaner structure or penalizes the slower growth profile. Downside risk is a guidance reset after the spin if order momentum softens, especially in the 3-6 month window when investors start anchoring on stand-alone numbers rather than conglomerate adjusted optics.
