Analysis

The main signal is not credit quality; it is funding mix and operating leverage. A bank can look healthy on NPLs and capital while still losing earning power if deposits leak and costs rise faster than fee income can scale. That combination usually precedes a slower ROE path and a lower valuation multiple, because investors start to discount a more wholesale-funded balance sheet and less stable margin profile.

Second-order, OP’s role as a funding hub means any deterioration can ripple beyond this name into Finnish bank spreads and internal liquidity allocation across the group. If deposit pressure persists for another 1-2 quarters, the marginal choice becomes either pricier funding or tighter lending standards, both of which can suppress loan growth and fee-linked activity. In a macro shock with higher energy costs, Finnish corporates are the first place to see a small credit-cost uptick, so the current low loss rate is more of a lagging indicator than a comfort blanket.

The contrarian point is that the market may already be anchoring on low impairments and strong liquidity, while underweighting the more structural drag from a shrinking deposit base. The thesis is falsified if Q3 shows deposit stabilization and a clear re-acceleration in cost discipline; absent that, FY26 ROE estimates still look vulnerable. Over 6-18 months, this is more a multiple-compression story than an outright earnings cliff.
