Stock Movers: Reddit, Applied Materials, Aerovironment (Podcast)

Reddit (RDDT) shares jump as the company is set to join the S&P 500 ahead of Aug. 18, replacing AvalonBay Communities (acquired by Equity Residential). Applied Materials (AMAT) shares fall despite an estimate-topping forecast, reflecting tepid investor reaction following a strong year-to-date rally. Aerovironment (AVAV) gains after the Trump administration moves to apply a 100% tariff on imported unmanned aircraft systems and components, supporting the push to build a domestic drone industrial base.

Analysis

RDDT is a flow trade first, fundamentals second. S&P inclusion forces passive demand and typically tightens borrow, so the next 1-5 sessions can see outsized upside even if nothing changes in ad monetization. The risk is that this becomes a crowded “event pop” with limited follow-through; once indexers are done, the stock will revert to trading on user growth and ad load, not benchmark ownership. For a multi-week horizon, the key question is whether management can convert the higher visibility into faster gross margin expansion; if not, the inclusion premium can leak out.

AVAV looks like the cleaner policy beneficiary, but the second-order effect is broader than one name: a 100% tariff should widen the moat for U.S.-assembled drone platforms and accelerate procurement toward domestic suppliers, while pressuring low-end importers and any OEMs with heavy foreign component content. The near-term upside is strongest for firms with existing manufacturing capacity and DoD relationships; the medium-term risk is that parts bottlenecks and higher input costs blunt the intended benefit and force pricing increases that slow adoption. This is more likely a 3-12 month industrial-policy trade than a one-day headline trade.

AMAT’s muted reaction suggests the market has already discounted the AI capex upgrade. The real catalyst path is not this forecast but whether wafer-fab equipment spending breadth improves beyond leading-edge AI nodes into memory and foundry, which would matter over 1-3 quarters. If that breadth does not show up, the stock is vulnerable to multiple compression after a strong run; if it does, the current pause becomes an entry point rather than a top. AVB is not a fundamental loser here—this is mostly a technical index event—while EQR’s market impact should be limited unless the acquisition terms imply balance-sheet strain.
