Of that, $26.5 trillion is tied to AI opportunities, making artificial intelligence the main growth pillar alongside Starlink, rockets, and prospective orbital data centers. Morningstar is more cautious, valuing the business at $780 billion and arguing the IPO may not offer enough margin of safety.

Analysis

The market is likely misreading this as a single-company IPO story when the bigger trade is a capital-allocation story across the AI stack. If SpaceX really pivots hard into AI infrastructure, the incremental winners are not necessarily the headline model labs; they are the picks-and-shovels names that monetize compute demand, networking, and power density. That creates a second-order bullish read-through for NVDA, but the more durable beneficiary could be infrastructure-linked semis and data-center supply chain names that capture spending regardless of which frontier model wins.

The negative read-through is for any incumbent AI platform whose valuation already assumes scarcity rents. A credible new entrant with a giant balance sheet and distribution edge raises the odds of price compression in consumer AI, ad-tech adjacent products, and enterprise workflows over the next 12-36 months. That is why MORN’s caution matters less as a valuation call on SpaceX and more as a signal that public-market investors may finally demand proof of unit economics from the broader AI cohort rather than rewarding narrative alone.

Contrarianly, the market may be underestimating execution friction around space-based compute. Orbital data centers are a thermodynamics-and-servicing problem, not just a capital problem, and the time to meaningful revenue is likely measured in years, not quarters. Meanwhile, the IPO itself can be a volatility event: if the deal prices at the upper end, the first few months should favor dispersion trades over outright directional longs because enthusiasm will front-run fundamentals and then fade as lockup/secondary supply dynamics emerge.

The cleanest setup is to treat this as a catalyst for relative-value rather than a standalone event. If SpaceX headlines drive a sector-wide AI bid, the more attractive trade is short-duration hedged exposure into the most crowded AI names, while keeping structural long exposure to the infrastructure beneficiaries that can grow into the capex wave. The key risk is that a successful IPO and aggressive capex plan can keep the AI complex bid for longer than expected, so sizing should assume a 6-12 month holding period with strict loss limits if breadth broadens beyond mega-cap semis.
