Earnings call transcript: Avanza Bank posts record Q2 2026 profit, shares rise

Avanza Bank posted a record Q2 2026 with operating profit of SEK 928 million and EPS of 4.97, lifting ROE to 43% (vs. a 35% target). Total income rose 6% sequentially and nearly 30% YoY, supported by strong trading and fund inflows (net fund inflows of SEK 17 billion; savings capital to an all-time high of SEK 1.2 trillion). Shares rose 3.25% pre-market to $386.2. Management reiterated full-year 2026 cost guidance (+9% for the Swedish business) while flagging ongoing Denmark expansion costs (~SEK 50 million) and sensitivity of net interest income to deposit volumes and policy-rate dynamics.

Analysis

Avanza is becoming less of a pure transaction broker and more of a cash-and-engagement platform. The second-order winner is any name that can capture rising retail risk appetite, larger foreign-exposure flows, and sticky savings balances; the losers are Swedish incumbent banks and legacy fund distributors that rely on inert deposits and higher-fee active products. The fact that more activity is migrating into global equities and broad funds matters because it lifts revenue quality: higher FX/foreign-trading mix and recurring fund inflows are more durable than one-off trading spikes.

The near-term risk is that investors over-annualize a quarter that benefited from a favorable market tape and unusually high deposit balances. NII is still rate-sensitive and should be modeled as a three-month lagging series; if STIBOR and policy rates roll over, that income can decelerate faster than brokerage can reaccelerate. The bigger 1-3 month catalyst is cost discipline: H2 margin expansion only works if Swedish opex truly slows and Denmark remains a controlled option, not a creeping drag.

Contrarian view: the market may be underpricing the long-duration option value of the new product stack, but overpricing the immediacy of earnings power. If the new pension/discretionary offerings land, Avanza’s multiple can deserve to stay elevated because the business mix shifts toward sticky assets and away from pure trading beta. But if customer cash keeps migrating out of deposits and rates fall, the headline ROE could normalize quickly; the thesis breaks if H2 cost growth re-accelerates above guidance or if deposit intensity drops materially below its historical range.
