Vistra Reports Second Quarter 2026 Results

Vistra reported Q2 2026 net income of $305M (down $22M YoY) but lifted Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA to $1,767M, up more than 30% YoY. The company reaffirmed 2026 guidance for Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA of $6.8B–$7.6B and Ongoing Operations Adjusted FCFbG of $3.925B–$4.725B, supported by hedging ~100% of expected 2026 volumes. Vistra also announced Helix Digital Infrastructure with an initial commitment of up to $1.0B (with NVIDIA/KKR/KIA) and received FERC approval for its pending Cogentrix acquisition; shares repurchases of ~$6.5B since 2021 and ~$1.2B remaining authorization further underpin the capital story.

Analysis

VST is screening as a quality-of-earnings story, not a one-quarter beat: the cash flow bridge is increasingly driven by locked-in merchant exposure plus buybacks, which should keep the equity premium elevated even if GAAP stays noisy from hedge marks. The key second-order effect is that a large hedge book lowers near-term downside but also caps some upside; that makes the 2027 earnings/cash-flow path more important than the reported quarter, because incremental rerating will come from visible unhedged growth and contract conversion rather than spot power volatility.

The Helix/NVDA/KKR angle matters most as an option on scarce load, not as immediate earnings contribution. If Vistra becomes a preferred power supplier to AI infrastructure, the market may start valuing the fleet like a capacity bottleneck asset instead of a commodity generator, which is positive for multiple expansion across VST and potentially the broader merchant power complex (NRG, CEG) while pressuring regulated-heavy utilities under XLU to justify their lower growth.

The main risk is that the market has already moved from 'power price leverage' to 'AI power optionality' faster than contract visibility. Without signed, site-specific offtake and interconnect milestones, Helix can remain a narrative premium with limited near-term P&L; any softening in forward power curves or a delay in Cogentrix/Meta monetization would likely hit the stock within 1-3 months, even though the structural story is intact over 6-18 months.
