Which AI Server Stock Has Dominated in 2026: Super Micro, Dell, or Hewlett Packard Enterprise?

Dell leads the three AI server stocks with a 242% YTD gain, supported by $24.4B in AI orders, Q1 FY27 revenue of $43.84B (+88% YoY), and raised FY27 revenue guidance to $165B-$169B. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is up 103% YTD after Q2 FY26 revenue rose 40% to $10.68B and networking revenue jumped 148%, while Super Micro is up just 9% YTD despite Q3 FY26 revenue of $10.24B (+123%) but with a miss versus consensus and ongoing export-control review. Valuations diverge sharply, with SMCI at 17x trailing earnings versus 34x for DELL and 46x for HPE, keeping the debate centered on momentum versus value.

Analysis

The market is rewarding the two vendors that have turned AI demand into visible earnings revision, while punishing the one where growth is still not cleanly monetizing into investor trust. The key second-order effect is that AI server buyers are now signaling a preference for lower-execution-risk supply: scale, financing discipline, and credible backlog conversion matter more than raw shipment growth. That keeps DELL and, to a lesser extent, HPE in the momentum bucket even if their multiples are already rich.

SMCI’s discount is less a simple value setup than a governance and dilution overhang with optionality attached. The financing raise likely altered the shareholder base from fast money to skeptical capital, which can suppress multiple expansion for longer than operating growth would suggest. If the independent review narrows the export-control issue quickly, the stock could re-rate sharply because the bar is so low; if not, the cheap P/E can get cheaper as earnings quality is re-rated downward.

The contrarian miss is that consensus may be overestimating how sustainable the current leadership gap is. Once hyperscalers diversify suppliers to avoid concentration risk, smaller players with clean balance sheets and stronger execution can capture incremental share, while the market may eventually penalize DELL/HPE for peak-margin expectations. The risk window is mostly next 1-2 earnings prints: any AI order book slowdown or guidance reset would hit the crowded longs first, while a clean SMCI catalyst could drive the largest upside surprise from current levels.
