Baird turns bearish on Coinbase, sees Q2 revenue miss and valuation risk

Baird cut Coinbase's price target to $142 from $160 and named it a Bearish Fresh Pick, warning Q2 revenue could miss Street estimates by 5%-6% as trading volumes likely fall 15%-20% sequentially. The firm flagged weak April-May activity, a potential lack of sustained June volume improvement, and valuation risk at about 35x 2027 estimated EPS. Baird sees downside to $75-$90 in a bear case if estimates and multiples compress further.

Analysis

COIN is not being repriced as a standalone crypto exchange so much as a beta proxy for the entire retail-risk complex. If volumes stay soft, the second-order damage is that the market starts marking down the durability of crypto engagement across brokers, wallets, and payment-adjacent fintechs, which can compress multiples across the group even before absolute revenue revisions fully hit. The real vulnerability is that COIN’s high-duration valuation leaves little room for a “good enough” quarter; a modest miss can trigger a larger de-rate than the earnings delta alone would imply.

The faster-moving catalyst is not regulation but flow. Weak spot activity can be masked briefly by episodic bitcoin rotation, but that is mechanically poorer quality volume and tends to fade quickly, which means any June bounce may prove transitory within days to weeks. If the market concludes that crypto trading is mean-reverting lower while equities/options remain healthy, COIN becomes the obvious underperformer versus broker/fintech peers with broader product diversification.

The contrarian case is that the stock may already be discounting an ugly print, so the next leg down likely requires either a sharper-than-expected revenue miss or guidance language that signals structural rather than cyclical weakness. That makes timing important: the highest-probability short is into any pre-earnings strength or post-bounce, not after a gap-down when implied disappointment is already partly absorbed. On a 3-6 month horizon, the key question is whether crypto activity can reaccelerate enough to support 2027 numbers; if not, the multiple can compress before the estimate cuts fully show up.

From a broader positioning lens, this is also a warning signal for other beat/raise fintechs trading on premium multiples: once the market starts punishing one high-multiple name for decelerating volume, it often rotates to the rest of the cohort. That creates a potentially attractive relative-value setup versus names with steadier transaction mixes and lower sensitivity to crypto participation.
