REX Financial launches covered call Nvidia ETF hours before earnings release

REX Financial launched the REX NVDA Growth & Income ETF, a covered call ETF tied to Nvidia, offering investors exposure to Nvidia's stock with a risk profile designed to generate weekly income through options. The launch comes as single-stock option-based ETFs, which debuted in late 2023, have amassed approximately $10 billion in assets, targeting self-directed individual investors seeking alternative income-generating products, though analysts suggest broader options-based strategies or direct stock ownership may be more effective for maximizing growth or income.

Analysis

REX Financial has launched the REX NVDA Growth & Income ETF, a single-stock exchange-traded fund centered on Nvidia (NVDA.O), strategically timed hours before the chipmaker's earnings announcement. This covered call ETF aims to provide investors with weekly income through option strategies while retaining exposure to a portion of Nvidia's potential stock price appreciation. Scott Acheychek, REX's COO, described the fund as offering a familiar stock with a more comfortable risk profile and income generation. The market for such single-stock option-based ETFs, which emerged in late 2023, has rapidly grown to approximately $10 billion in total assets, primarily attracting self-directed individual investors seeking alternative income. However, Bryan Armour, an ETF analyst at Morningstar, suggests that while such structured products might outperform the underlying stock in flat or declining market conditions, investors seeking to maximize either growth or income might be better served by direct stock purchases or broader options-based ETF strategies. Armour also noted that these products are "not trying to maximize either growth or income." Ahead of its earnings, Nvidia shares closed at $134.81, down 0.5%. The introduction of this ETF reflects a growing trend in specialized investment vehicles, though their specific utility compared to traditional investment approaches remains a point of discussion among analysts.
