Alphabet’s Q2 earnings are expected to “normalize” after a massive Q1 beat, with investors refocusing on in-house semiconductor growth. Hyperscalers are positioning custom proprietary silicon units as standalone businesses to better compete in cloud. Despite heavy capex raising GAAP depreciation risk, the infrastructure buildout is viewed as setting up more profitable proprietary chip sales.
The market should treat Alphabet’s silicon push less as a revenue story and more as a cost-of-compute strategy: if TPU-like architecture lowers inference cost per request, the upside shows up first in cloud gross margin and later in pricing power, not in a flashy new line item. That makes GOOGL a structural winner versus peers still renting most of their AI stack from external accelerators, especially if management can prove that AI workloads are now accretive at scale rather than just growing faster than depreciation.
The second-order loser is NVIDIA, but the effect is not immediate. Training workloads still favor its ecosystem, so the real risk is a 6-18 month erosion in hyperscaler share of inference and more price discipline on future GPU refresh cycles; that pressure would show up first in cloud vendor capex mix, then in NVDA gross margin expectations. More subtle beneficiaries include TSMC and select custom-ASIC supply chain names if hyperscalers broaden internal silicon programs, while merchant silicon vendors face mix pressure if custom designs keep pulling share from off-the-shelf parts.
Near term, the stock may not move much because Q1 was already exceptional and the next print likely normalizes on headline EPS. The cleaner catalyst is 1-3 months out: cloud margin commentary, capex guidance, and any evidence that AI utilization is outrunning depreciation. The thesis breaks if capex keeps climbing without a visible improvement in operating margin or if internal silicon remains confined to niche workloads with no economic scale.
