Bank of America double-upgraded Intel to Buy from Underperform and raised its price target to $135 from $96, citing a shift in AI spending toward CPUs and chip manufacturing. The firm now estimates the server-processor market could exceed $170 billion by 2030, with Intel capturing about a quarter, while Intel's data center and AI revenue rose 22% year over year to about $5.1 billion in Q1 2026. Offset by valuation risk and foundry losses, the stock had already more than tripled in 2026 and rose about 6% after the upgrade.

Analysis

The real signal here is not that Intel is suddenly “cheap” after a vertical move; it’s that the market may be repricing where AI spending accrues in the stack. If agentic workflows meaningfully increase orchestration, memory traffic, and inference scheduling, CPU content per rack can rise even if GPUs remain the demand anchor. That creates a second-order read-through for the broader semiconductor supply chain: the next leg of AI capex may be less concentrated in accelerators and more distributed across server CPUs, networking, and manufacturing capacity.

That said, this is a classic late-cycle upgrade setup: the fundamental thesis can be directionally right while the equity is already ahead of the evidence. Intel’s leverage to the narrative is high because any incremental foundry validation can re-rate the stock, but the downside is also high because execution risk remains multi-quarter and binary. The market is implicitly discounting a clean transition from “turnaround” to “credible second-source foundry,” and that transition is exactly where prior Intel bull cases have broken.

From a cross-asset perspective, the cleaner beneficiary may be not Intel outright but the ecosystem that wins regardless of whose CPU wins share. TSM is still the toll booth on advanced manufacturing, and AAPL/MediaTek-style outsourcing only reinforces that structure if Intel’s foundry remains capacity-constrained or delayed. NVDA is less threatened near term, but if CPU attach rates improve in agentic server architectures, some incremental budget can come out of accelerator intensity rather than total AI capex—more of a mix shift than a replacement.

The contrarian miss is that “AI broadens beyond GPUs” is not the same as “Intel captures the value.” Consensus may be underestimating CPU demand elasticity, but it may be overestimating Intel’s ability to convert that into durable margin expansion. At over 100x forward earnings, the stock now requires both sustained demand re-acceleration and a credible foundry milestone cadence; absent that, any disappointment over the next 1–2 quarters could compress multiple quickly even if revenues keep growing.
