Is This the Next Cryptocurrency to Go Mainstream?

NEAR Protocol has surged 115% in May and is up 35% in 2026 as investors bid up AI-linked cryptocurrencies, with its market cap now around $2.7B. The project is pivoting from a 2020 Ethereum competitor to infrastructure for AI agent commerce, including privacy features for corporate workflows. Despite the rally, the article remains cautious on long-term fundamentals and notes NEAR is still down about 90% from its 2022 peak near $20.

Analysis

This move is less about NEAR’s own fundamentals than about the market repricing anything that can be narrated as an “AI rail.” That creates a reflexive loop: higher token prices attract attention, attention attracts developer mindshare, and developer mindshare is then used to justify a higher multiple. The second-order risk is that this dynamic is fragile; if AI-agent adoption does not translate into real transaction volume within the next 2-3 quarters, the market will likely compress the premium as quickly as it expanded it.

For NVDA and INTC, the linkage is looser but still relevant. The AI-crypto narrative can reinforce broader AI capex optimism, which helps keep semiconductor valuation support intact even when near-term earnings revisions slow. The bigger implication is sentiment spillover: speculative crypto strength often acts as a leading indicator for retail risk appetite, which can temporarily lift adjacent AI beta baskets before fundamentals catch up.

The contrarian read is that this is mostly a scarcity trade, not a quality trade. A token with a prior drawdown this large can double on narrative alone because the denominator is so depressed, but that does not make it a durable winner in AI commerce. If “agentic payments” ends up being implemented through existing cloud/payment rails with better compliance and lower friction, the market will eventually reallocate attention away from chain-native solutions and toward incumbents that control distribution, security, or compute. The main tail risk for shorts is a spot ETF catalyst or another broad crypto risk-on leg, which could extend the squeeze for weeks even if the thesis remains weak.
