Billionaire Bill Ackman Built a $2.1 Billion Stake in Microsoft After the Stock Slid. Is It Still a Buy?

Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square disclosed a new Microsoft position of 5.7M shares (~$2.1B) at a P/E of 21 in May. Since Microsoft’s July 29 earnings, shares have jumped about 25% from ~$390 (7/29) to ~$488 (8/5), after Q4 results showed revenue +18% and earnings +32% (beating estimates) with Azure up 43% YoY. Management guided to ~45% Azure growth for the fiscal Q1, helping ease earlier investor worries about AI spending and OpenAI exclusivity.

Analysis

The key shift is not the earnings beat itself but the market’s willingness to underwrite AI capex as accretive rather than dilutive. That matters for the whole hyperscaler complex: if Microsoft can convert spend into visible Azure acceleration, it raises confidence that NVDA/AVGO/AMAT demand remains intact for at least the next 2-4 quarters. The second-order winner may be the picks-and-shovels cohort, while the relative loser is any software name still asking for premium multiples without proving similar monetization.

The competitive dynamic is increasingly about bundled distribution, not raw model quality. Microsoft’s ability to embed AI into the enterprise workflow makes stand-alone application vendors more vulnerable to substitution, especially those selling point solutions into the same IT budget. AMZN and GOOGL remain relevant cloud share competitors, but the bigger implication is that the market may reward “ecosystem control” over pure cloud growth, which should keep MSFT’s multiple sticky even if overall tech multiples stay range-bound.

Risk is now mainly about duration, not thesis. Over the next 1-3 months, the stock is vulnerable to any deceleration in Azure growth or a capex guide that implies weaker FCF conversion; after a 25% rerate, the bar is high. Over 6-18 months, the bear case is that AI becomes table stakes and returns on incremental spend normalize, while the bull case is that Microsoft keeps compounding wallet share and reclaims a premium as a lower-volatility growth compounder.
