We're adding to our position in a chipmaker as the AI trade regains its footing

Jim Cramer’s Charitable Trust plans to buy 100 Intel (INTC) shares at about $97.97, raising its stake to 1,300 shares and increasing portfolio weight to ~3.20% from 3.0%. The piece notes Intel shares have bounced ~10% Tuesday but are slightly weaker premarket after AMD’s strong quarter, while the author argues the AI-driven demand backdrop and hyperscaler capex commentary re-support Intel trading back toward the ~$113 after-hours post-earnings level.

Analysis

The near-term trade is less about Intel’s standalone fundamentals and more about a reset in positioning: when a crowded unwind ends, the stock can re-rate sharply even before the operating story fully improves. That helps INTC tactically, but the larger AI capex cycle is still being monetized more directly by the names selling picks-and-shovels and leading-edge capacity, so the second-order winner is still the supply chain, not Intel itself. AMD’s inability to clear an elevated bar also matters: it reduces the urgency for the market to pay peak multiples for every CPU beneficiary at once.

The key risk is that Intel remains a story of execution and financing, not just sentiment. If capex stays elevated without visible customer commitments, the equity can trade well until investors refocus on dilution, margin pressure, or slower-than-advertised foundry adoption; that risk lives on a 1-3 month horizon around the next guide/update cycle. On the downside, a failure to reclaim the prior post-earnings peak would suggest this is mostly a squeeze, not a durable rerating.

Contrarian view: the market may be overestimating how much of the AI/CPU demand inflection accrues to INTC versus AMD/NVDA/AVGO/TSM. Intel can work as a laggard catch-up trade if flows stay supportive, but it is not yet a clean fundamentals-led compounder. If the next set of hyperscaler spend comments or Intel customer announcements disappoint, the multiple could compress back quickly even if the broader semiconductor tape stays firm.
