A $10,000 Investment in Taiwan Semiconductor Today Will Be Worth This Much by 2028

TSMC says it expects strong chip demand from AI through at least 2029–2030 and is investing an additional $100B in Arizona capacity to meet supply needs. Wall Street projects 42% 2026 revenue growth followed by 32% in 2027, with the article modeling NT$9.32T (~$291B) revenue by 2028 and a ~50% profit margin, implying ~$146B profit. At a 29x earnings multiple, the piece estimates a ~$4.2T valuation (about double vs ~$2.1T), framing TSMC as a key AI-capex beneficiary regardless of which AI platform wins.

Analysis

TSM is the cleaner AI exposure than the end-chip designers because the economic rent in a multi-winner AI race still has to pass through a scarce manufacturing bottleneck. That favors TSM’s pricing power and advanced-node mix, while leaving NVDA and AMD more exposed to product-cycle resets and valuation compression if customer spend broadens from GPUs into custom silicon. The second-order winners are the semi-cap tool names (ASML, AMAT, LRCX, KLAC), but they benefit with a lag; TSM benefits immediately from capacity scarcity and then again from any sustained backlog.

The market risk is that investors are conflating demand visibility with margin permanence. Near term, heavy offshore/Arizona capex can hold free cash flow back and make headline earnings look better than cash economics, so the stock can still de-rate if utilization or gross margin trends wobble for even one or two quarters. The key catalyst path is 1-3 months of confirmation on advanced-node demand and margin resilience; the longer-duration support is only real if customers keep pulling capacity through 2026-2029.

The contrarian miss is that AI spend may be more durable than the market thinks, but the value transfer may shift upstream to TSM faster than consensus models reflect. At the same time, the stock is not immune to a geopolitical or currency discount, and those risks can cap multiple expansion even if revenue keeps compounding. Thesis breaks if TSM starts guiding to margin erosion below the high-40s, if utilization weakens, or if U.S./Taiwan policy friction raises the offshore discount again.
