Mercer International reported Q2 2026 operating EBITDA of negative $21.0M (down from +$8.0M in Q1) and net loss of $76.0M ($1.13/share), including a $29.0M non-cash inventory impairment tied to historically high German fiber costs. Liquidity fell $37M to $191.7M (cash $78.8M plus $112.9M undrawn revolvers) as German revolving credit facilities were reclassified to current liabilities due to an expected leverage covenant miss. Management is evaluating financing transactions while executing a Torgau restructuring (100 contractor roles cut in July; 250 more planned through Q2 2027) and expects major maintenance in Q3 (40 days, ~42,000 tons impact).

Analysis

This is no longer a clean cyclical pulp long/short; it is a balance-sheet event with commodity upside as a secondary driver. Once a company is in current-liability reclassification and going-concern territory, any improvement in pulp pricing or lumber spreads tends to accrue first to creditors via refinancing power, not to common equity. The key mechanical issue is that the business needs a fairly large operating swing to cover fixed costs and capex, so modest commodity recovery is not enough unless it is paired with covenant relief or asset sales.

The second-order winners are the lower-leverage names and upstream suppliers that can capture volume displaced by Mercer's curtailments. Reduced German production should ease chip demand into Canada and North America, while residue/biomass competitors in Europe keep a structural pricing edge because they can outbid a stressed pulp producer for fiber. By contrast, the mass-timber backlog is supportive but too lumpy and hyperscaler-concentrated to offset the refinancing story near term.

Catalysts are front-loaded over the next 1-3 months: waiver discussions, noteholder terms, and any language around liquidity runway will dominate the tape. Over 6-18 months, the thesis only improves if German fiber costs roll over materially, NBSK tightens into the maintenance season, and the company proves it can fund maintenance without incremental dilution. The contrarian risk is a short squeeze on any credible financing package or if late-2026 pulp pricing improves enough to keep the lenders engaged, but that would still mostly help the debt stack unless the equity overhang is removed.
