Amazon Stock Hits a New All-Time High: Is It Still a Buy?

Amazon shares rallied to a new all-time high above $287 and are up ~19% YTD after reporting strong quarterly results. AWS posted 37% growth (fastest in 18 quarters), driving 61% of $27.5B operating income ($16.6B), and CEO Andy Jassy said AI and chips run rates each exceed $25B. Earnings appear partially inflated by ~$53.4B of “other income” mainly tied to investments in Anthropic, but the stock still trades at a modest ~22 P/E and ~23 forward P/E based on analyst projections.

Analysis

The market is rewarding Amazon for a better mix of growth and margin, but the more important point is that AWS is regaining the right kind of operating leverage: faster growth in the cash engine matters more than incremental retail share gains. That supports further multiple expansion near term, especially because the AI/chips narrative gives investors a second way to underwrite future cloud spend without assuming a pure software model.

The risk is that reported earnings quality is noisier than the headline P/E implies. Investment gains can mask the true run-rate, so if those marks normalize, the stock can look materially more expensive even if operating performance stays strong. In other words, the setup is better for a durable compounder than a cheap value story; the market is likely to tolerate a higher multiple only if AWS growth and free-cash-flow conversion stay synchronized.

Second-order effects favor NVDA in the very near term because stronger AI capex still means more training/inference demand, but Amazon’s custom silicon is a medium-term competitive threat to merchant accelerator economics. Over 6-18 months, the key falsifier is a reversion in AWS growth or a capex surge that outpaces monetization; that would pull the stock back toward a normal large-cap tech multiple rather than a premium AI infrastructure multiple. Consensus may be underestimating how much of the upside is already in the tape after the breakout, versus how little of the earnings beat is truly recurring.
