Chevron’s Project Kilby will power Microsoft’s planned West Texas AI data center with about 2.7 GW of behind-the-meter capacity, with GE Vernova supplying most of the natural gas turbines. The deal reinforces GE Vernova’s backlog, which was $163 billion at the end of March and is expected to reach $200 billion by end-2027, while Wells Fargo reiterated a buy-equivalent rating and a $1,259 price target. Shares fell more than 7% on Tuesday amid a broader tech selloff, but the article frames the project as a strong demand and pricing signal for GEV.

Analysis

This is less a one-off project win than a validation of a scarce-capacity bottleneck: large-frame gas turbines are becoming the toll booth for AI infrastructure. The market is still underestimating how much hyperscaler demand can re-rate equipment pricing, because the binding constraint is not appetite for compute but the ability to physically deliver power on a multi-year timetable. That dynamic favors the suppliers with the deepest installed base and service footprint, and it also implies that order visibility should stay unusually high even if tech multiples wobble.

The second-order effect is that off-grid generation de-risks local permitting and grid congestion, which widens the addressable market for behind-the-meter power solutions beyond the current flagship projects. If this model scales, demand should spill into adjacent beneficiaries: switchgear, transformers, cooling, fiber, and power management software. It also creates a subtle competitive moat for integrated power names, because the customer is effectively buying a full-stack project schedule, not just a turbine.

The near-term selloff in AI-linked equities looks more like factor de-grossing than a change in fundamentals, but the key risk is timing mismatch: shares can mean-revert long before 2028 revenue is recognized. A sharper risk is policy backlash if these projects are perceived as diverting gas supply or raising local emissions, which could slow approvals and compress the rate at which backlog converts to cash. Another watch item is pricing: once turbine lead times start easing, margin upside could flatten faster than headline backlog suggests.

Consensus is probably still too linear on GE Vernova’s backlog quality. The market treats backlog as visibility, but in a supply-constrained cycle it is also a price-discovery mechanism; the real bull case is not just more units, but higher realized economics per unit over the next 12-24 months. That makes the move in GEV look directionally right, but not necessarily complete if the company keeps proving that each hyperscaler deal pulls forward a broader wave of follow-on orders.
