Sterling Infrastructure: America's Data Center Builder With A Still Long Runway

Sterling Infrastructure (STRL) reported Q1 FY26 revenue growth of 92% and adjusted EPS growth of 120%, while raising full-year guidance on a strong backlog and successful CEC integration. The company highlighted a $6.5B project pipeline and a net cash position, supporting continued high-margin, AI/data-center-linked demand. Despite the positive momentum, management noted that the high valuation requires sustained execution to maintain growth.

Analysis

The market should treat STRL less like a generic contractor and more like a scarce pick-and-shovel name tied to power-constrained AI buildouts. That matters because the near-term winner set extends beyond the company itself: utilities, substation/grid contractors, and electrical equipment vendors (PWR, ETN, NVT) should see pull-through as hyperscalers move from announcing capex to actually clearing sites and connecting load. The second-order loser is the broad, undifferentiated civil-construction bucket where growth is slower and margin quality is weaker; STRL’s re-rating is partly a scarcity premium for exposed capacity.

The key risk is that the current setup can outrun fundamentals if investors underwrite straight-line backlog conversion. In the next 1-3 months, the stock likely trades on order intake, margin mix, and whether integration benefits from CEC are real rather than ceremonial. Over 6-18 months, the main falsifier is not demand, but project slippage from power interconnect delays, permitting, or customer concentration if a few hyperscalers pause site work while they re-phase data-center builds. Because the business has become more mission-critical, execution lapses should hit the multiple harder than before.

Consensus is probably underestimating how durable the AI infra spend cycle is, but also overestimating how linear the margin expansion will be. High valuation means STRL only works if revenue growth stays exceptional and free cash flow converts cleanly; any sign of gross margin normalization or backlog deceleration should compress the multiple quickly. The trade is therefore best expressed as a relative-quality long rather than an aggressive outright chase.
