CoreWeave Just Joined the Nasdaq-100. Here's Why I Would Buy the Stock It Is Replacing Instead.

Nasdaq-100 reshuffled AI/space names as CoreWeave (CRWV) replaced Charter Communications (CHTR), but the article argues Charter is the better value. CoreWeave grew revenue to $2B (+100% YoY) yet remains unprofitable and burned ~$10B in free cash flow over the prior 12 months, while Charter is described as generating positive free cash flow for a decade and trading at a much lower P/S than CoreWeave’s 7.7. The piece also cites leverage and coverage differences—CoreWeave reportedly has ~$25B debt vs Charter’s ~$94B, with Charter’s quarterly operating income of $3.2B covering quarterly interest expense of $1.25B.

Analysis

The more important signal is not “new economy beats old economy,” but that the market is still paying for scarcity of growth even when the economic quality is poor. CRWV is effectively a levered call on continued hyperscaler capex and cheap GPU supply; if that spending cadence normalizes, revenue can decelerate faster than the market expects because depreciation, power, and lease obligations are sticky. CHTR’s cash generation gives it much better downside support than the stock implies, but it remains a low-growth, refinancing-sensitive asset rather than a growth compounder.

Second-order winners are upstream suppliers and adjacent infrastructure, especially NVDA on sustained AI buildout and power/colo names if GPU demand stays tight. The key risk for CRWV is that competition from the largest clouds compresses pricing before utilization catches up, which would expose weak unit economics. For CHTR, the real bear case is not wireless substitution in the next quarter; it is a slow bleed in retention spend that drags EBITDA while leverage keeps equity duration high.

Consensus is too linear on both sides: overconfident that CRWV’s growth persists, and too certain that CHTR’s base erodes immediately. The rebalance-driven flow into CRWV and out of CHTR can dominate price for days, but over 1-3 months fundamentals should reassert if CRWV continues burning cash and CHTR holds operating income. The thesis is falsified if CRWV shows credible free-cash-flow inflection or if CHTR’s next prints show accelerating broadband net losses and wider credit spreads.
