Micron Smashed Even the Bulls: Evercore Says This AI Rally Has the ‘Earnings Power' to Last

Micron posted a major Q3 beat with adjusted EPS of $25.11 vs. $20.78 consensus and revenue of $41.456B, up 345.72% year over year, while non-GAAP gross margin reached 84.9%. Q4 guidance was also strong at about $50B revenue, $31.00 ± $1.00 EPS, and ~86% gross margin, supported by strategic AI/HBM customer contracts. Shares rose 12.68% on earnings day, and the report reinforces the view that AI demand is driving durable supplier profitability.

Analysis

The key second-order read-through is that memory has stopped behaving like a cyclical commodity and started functioning like a constrained AI infrastructure input. If HBM is being sold under multi-year commercial terms, the earnings multiple should migrate from trough-book-to-book to something closer to a scarce-enabler premium, which compresses the opportunity set for classic short-DRAM/long-semiconductor-recovery trades. That also means the usual “peak margin” objection is less useful unless buyers can prove the contract structure is easily repriced or the next node transition materially dilutes economics.

The competitive implication is asymmetric. MU’s pull-through should improve pricing discipline across the HBM ecosystem, but it also raises the barrier for weaker memory suppliers that lack leading-edge packaging, customer qualification, and balance-sheet flexibility. The likely winners beyond MU are not the obvious hyperscalers; they are adjacent bottlenecks such as advanced substrate, test/assembly, and high-end networking names that benefit from higher AI server build intensity without directly funding the capex race.

The main risk is not next quarter; it is 6-18 months out, when supply response catches up and AI buyers push back on contract renewals. The market may also be underestimating how quickly a small disappointment in HBM output, yield, or customer concentration can re-rate the entire thesis if one anchor customer slows platform ramps. On the other hand, if MU’s guidance proves repeatable, the stock’s low forward multiple likely reflects stale earnings assumptions rather than a true cycle discount, which is why the move may still be under-owned rather than overdone.

The contrarian angle is that the biggest winner may be the customer base, not the supplier, if AI capex is still in the phase where unit economics are being subsidized to secure ecosystem share. But for now, the tape says the market is rewarding the bottleneck with the pricing power, and the burden of proof shifts to bears to show why this is a one-off rather than a new operating regime.
